Screentone

Screentones are widely used by manga artists, usually shoujo artists tend to use a lot of them then the shounan artists. It is a sheet of contact paper with designs printed on top of them.

The shading of the face, the background, the gradient you see, all comes from the use of screen tone. It comes in variety of patterns.

Screentone was originally a trademark developed by LETRASET, but when other companies started making them, it was then known as screentone. Nowadays there are over few hundred kind of screentones produced by deleter, letraset and etc. But really novices don't need screentones (unless you've got heaps of money??) I know the the Japanese ones are quite expansive, it should sell around 500 yen per sheet which means around 5 US?? I'm not quite sure, but there are ones made in Korea and China, still quite good quality and cheaper as well, should be around 2 US.
